Good morning,
For the last week or so, My officejet pro 8600 has been giving me the error
'Cannot connect to REDACTEDPublicScans. Make sure the remote computer is turned on.'
It will correct itself if we restart the computer/printer in question. but this only solves the issue for approx 6-7 hours.
Things i have done to attempt to fix this.
Set a static ip address for both the computer in question and the printer itself.
updated the IP address using the HP tool.
reinstalled the HP office program.
Set DMZ for both the computer and printer.
Set the public scans folder to zero security( so anyone connected to the network can gain unrestricted access)
re-setup the network feature on the printer itself.
however now i am at a loss.
Any help would be great.

  • Hello All,
    I have a printer installed an AIO HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g which is cappable of scanning either by flatbed or feeder to a networked drive/folder. For the most part this works fine, however 2 times out of 10 it produces the following error;
'Cannot connect to 'Server detailsFolder location path'. Make sure the remote computer is turned on.'
Now I have seen many post about disabling the filewall and other, however none of this type after an install.
Some obvous checks have been made already, Network cable replace, Changing of the destination folder location, and reseting the password for the scanner to auth as well as confirming the permisions. And each time the tests via the web console and physical tests work fine though this doesn't last.
    Could anyone help?
    Thanks

    Hi @Paperjam27
From your description, it sounds like the issue is intermittent. It can sometimes be challenging to identify the root cause of an issue when the problem is not consistent, but I am happy to work with you towards a solution. I suspect the issue might have something to do with the network. I know you said you have tried a new cable and done some troubleshooting already but bear with me here.
When you say you replaced the cable, do you have an Ethernet cable connected between the printer and the router? if not, then I wonder if there is some sort of interference on your wireless connection. Is your router is a dual band router broadcasting both 2.4 and 5.0 frequency? The printer only works on 2.4GHz, maybe this is the root cause.
The channel your router is set to can impact your network consistency too. For example, if you are on channel 11 and others in your area are also on channel 11 or even 9 or 10 it causes congestion on that channel. Think of the channel like a highway or interstate, the more cars on that highway/interstate, the slower you go due to congestion, if you are on a highway with less people are on it, it is more like smooth sailing! You can print a network configuration page to see what channel you are using and see what channel others in your area are no. If the higher channels are most common you might consider changing yours to 1, 2, or 3, and visa versa. How to: Printing a Network Configuration Page.
has this ben an issue since you have had the printer or did it recently start happening? If this only recently started, can you think of anything that changed recently? Do you have only one access point (router) or do you have a secondary router or extender? Can you think of anything that might be interfering with your network, and do you find the issue occurs more at a certain time of the day than others?
I found on my network at home, I was often seeing delays in response time in the early evening because others are coming home from school and work and 'clogging up the channel', I changed the channel and have had little to no issue since.
Let me know if you think of anything, and post back with the answers to the questions I have posted and I will get back to you. Thanks.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600
    Windows 7 64bit
    updated router firmware
Troubleshoot all item s listed by HP and with Windows
I have been unable to print wireless from my laptop. Wireless network test results gives me a pass in all categories. Network name is the same on printer and laptop. IP address on printer and tcp port are the same. Tried firewall on and off. AVG antivirus on and off. Unplugged printer, router, usb, restarted laptop. Nothing has solved the problem.
I can see that the printer has an ip address. My router has an ip address and my laptop has an ip address. Should they all be different? I am using the ip address from the printer to set up the wireless printing when asked to enter the address.
This has been the most frustrating process I have ever delt with. It should not be this difficult to set up. Please help.
Thank you in advance for a quick solution.

Shurlee, I want you to do is re-run the wireless setup wizard on your printer. Then uninstall it, and reinstall it again using the software I am going to link you to below. From what you describe it sounds like either an installation issue or an issue with your network. If this helps feel free to mark my post by hitting the star below my name which gives me a kudos - kinda like a job well done on here.
First if you use a USB cord, make sure to remove it. Do not plug it back in until the software directs you to. Then go through the Devices and Printers, Programs and Features and Device Manager folders and insure that all copies, files, and programs related to the printer are removed. Then as directed, restart the computer.
In the START menu type '%temp%' and press ENTER. Here I want you to press Ctrl+A and hit DELETE. Some of the files will not allow you to delete them, skip those files and delete the majority that allows it.
Download these files and install them. By the way these are for the N911a, but if you have the 8600 Plus or Premium you will need different drivers.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4323659
Install that and let me know the result!

  • I am trying scan legal sized documents on my new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. I have reviewed the forums, and this has been a recurring problem in the past (see link--- http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Scanning-Legal-Size-Documents/m-p/35416#M14.. ), but does not appear to be resolved. Whether I use the document feeder or the glass, the document is cut off at the bottom, and appears to be stopping at the 'A4' size, vs. legal. I cannot locate any setting on the scanner itself, or in the HP Utility software to change this, or even to be able to identify the current setting, if it is one.
I am using a Mac Pro, system 10.6.8, just installed and started using the printer a couple of days ago, and everything is up to date software-wise. Everything else on this machine has been working beautifully.
Can anyone identify what's going on here and how to correct it?
Thanks for your help--I specifically chose this particular unit over the next model down due to the legal sized glass/bed, and if I can't use it to scan legal docs, well, that's a problem. Thanks for your help!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium Printer (CN577A)
    OS: MS 7 64 bit
When using the ADF for my CN577A HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium printer, I get a single vertical line on the document that is produced. This occurs when copying or scanning, both in black and white, and in color. If I scan or copy using the glass, I don't get the vertical line.
I already tried the troubleshooting. I unplugged the printer, left it without power for several minutes; that didn't correct the problem. Next, I cleaned the rollers and the glass; I still get the vertical line, but only when using the ADF.
My firmware version used is current (CLP1CN1150CR).
    What should I check next?
    This question was solved.

The ADF uses its own glass area on the scanner bed, it is the narrow (about 1' wide) strip on the left. Cleaning this area should resolve the issue. A single small spot would cause the issue you are seeing.

  • I have a strange issue: after some hours, the communication link is dropped between the computer and printer. When this happens, IE becomes unusable and will not connect to anything. This is replicated on three XP home machines. The fourth, a vista ultimate machine, does not seem to be affected (yet). I get the 'scan to computer is disabled' error. It cannot be re-enabled. At this point I cannot print either. I can reach the embedded web server on the printer via firefox and can still surf using firefox. I can ping the printer, but again once the connection is dropped, no printing or scanning to the computer. The only thing I've found that resolves the issue (temporarily) is to reboot the computer, which just starts the cycle again.
last night I installed the software on an XP machine and the laptop to test when the connection dropped. They lasted from 7pm Monday until I got home at 5pm Tues. The machines were not used. Once I started using them (firefox only), then they dropped the connection within a half hour of each other around 7pm. The other XP machine lasted from 7pm Mon until 7am tues, when my wife started using it and then noticed it dropped sometime that tues between 7 and 9AM. An 11am tues reboot ran OK until 10 pm tues when connection was lost again (and IE is now dead). The Vista machine has been running since 7pm monday until now (930pm tues) and still seems to be holding.
printer hardwired, to router, static IP, 100-full link speed (also tried 10-half)
    router dlink di-655
two XP machines are hardwired, vista is hardwired, and last xp machine is a laptop on wireless.
I've swapped cables rebooted and reinstalled multiple times. I must have a file a mile long on the support phone line. They were unable to fix it. I asked this to be escalated, but who knows when I'll get a response.
I've toggled firewalls - XP built in
    I've uninstalled anti virus software
I've even put up with crazy suggestions from tech support like changing the router channel (uhh, it is wired!)
one xp machine had an AIO 4215 hooked via USB and the others printed to it via network, but the printer has been deleted from the networked machines.
I can ping 127.0.0.1 which is supposed to indicate the tcp service is OK.
I have not reset winsock . I can see one machine being bad, but three????
malware / virus scan shows no issues. Again one maybe, but three??
The only thing I can think of is that there is something in the XP networking stack that conflicts with the new 8600 software as hours pass. Perhaps there is some polling operation that goes on then dies after some time, then it kills IE as it dies.
When the printer works it is great, but rebooting is not a permanent solution to this.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! I am stumped and so is tech support. They are sending it to engineering, but who knows when they will respond.
    thanks in advance.

well it looks like I have a working solution .. I downloaded a freeware file called process.exe . I made a cmd file via notepad with the following contents:
rem this is to keep the HP network printer communicating with the desktops
    rem
    process -k 'hpnetworkcommunicator.exe'
    rem
    process -k 'scantopcactivationapp.exe'
    rem
    'C:Program FilesHPHP Officejet Pro 8600BinHPNetworkcommunicator.exe'
    rem
Start ' 'C:Program FilesHPHP Officejet Pro 8600BinScanToPCActivationApp.exe' -deviceID CNXXXX:NW -scfn 'HP Officejet Pro 8600 (Network)'
the XXXX is your printer serial number with an extra character or two. Pull that number from the port tab after you pull up 'properties' for the 8600 printer.
This cmd file basically restarts the printer link. It opens a command window that launches the program to re-establish the link. then it closes the command window. The launched program shows that the communication link is dead (just for a few seconds), but then it makes the connection.. THEN you hit the close button and coninue your work until it dies again.
I may have it autorun every X hours if I can narrow down a good time. Until then I have a shortcut on the desktop to 'FIX HP LINK' .. I only had to do this for my XP machines, as the vista one seemed OK.
What ticks me off is that I shouldn't have to do all of this diagnosis. It would be nice if there is a fix in the pipeline so the link stays stable al the time. I've spent hours trying to figure this crap out.
Anyhow, I hope the time I spent helps someone. PS, thanks to the OJ6500 thread that had the info for the scantopcactivationapp.exe program.
PS .. I'm still waiting for an engineer to contact me, if any HP employees are reading this.
PSS I haven't tried this without killing and restarting the hpnetworkcommunicator stuff, but it works for now.

  • i have an hp officejet pro 8600 plus. had it for 6 months or so. intial setup went fine..connected to the wireless network with no problems..airprint worked instantly from all of my apple devices. recently, in the last 3 weeks, airprint has stopped working. when i turn the printer off and turn it back on, airprint will work for about 5 minutes. but then it stops working. it is like the printer is losing wireless connectivity, but the wirless diagnostics show it to be connected fine.
i have an apple airport exptreme router. it is showing to be connected just fine to the network and i can see the printer's mac address as a wireless client in the Airport Utility.
    any ideas?

    Hi henryje,
Sorry to hear you are experiencing these issues. I would be glad to help.
Try changing the channel on the AirPort Extreme router to channel 11 or any channel that seem less congested.
You can check you network channel environment by printing a Network Configuration page from the Wireless Settings menu on printer front panel. The second page of the printout will display all detected networks by the printer listed by signal strength. You can also use InSSIDer: http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html
Printers also do not support the 5GHz band, so if your network uses 5GHz only, you can disable this in the AirPort Extreme router config page.

  • My boss stricly uses his iPad and has the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus for wireless printing. However, he's been having major problems printing. The iPad appears to see the printer on AirPrint, but nothing is getting printed. We've tried connecting the printer directly to our network, and it still won't print. We even got a new wireless router (Linksys E900 Wirless-N300 Router) but that has not seemed to help with the issue. I previously had the officejet 8500 and had multiple problems with it connecting wireless, to the point we just got rid of it. Are there any workarounds other than getting a new printer?

    Hi,
Airprint uses Apple's Bonjour which relies on Multicasting.
From my experience, Linksys routers do not have Multicast enabled by their default configuration.
Try modifying the router configuration by entering the router homepage (Its address should be the same as the Default Gateway listed on the printer once clicking the network icon.
From the router config click Security.
Check the checkbox next to Filter Multicast and Save the settings.
Reboot the router and check for any change.
If the issue persists I would also recommend checing for any firmware update to your router, those can improve Multicast traffic handaling in many cases.
    Hope that helps,
    Shlomi

  • I selected grayscale printing. Now I want to print in color and cannot find how to print in color. Option not found.

Here's an answer - it might not match your setup though:
    OS: Windows 8.1
Print Driver: HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver, 2012-10-22 , Version28.8
Bring up the HP Officejet Pro 8600 software and select Set Preferences under Print:
Then on the Printing Prefrences dialog, press the Advanced button:
And then on the Advanced Options dialog, turn off the option under Printer Features for Print in Grayscale:
    Hopefully that helps.

  • My OJ Pro 8600 was previously configured and working properly, but has stopped. I was able to print off of 3 computers and a phone. All have the same IP directed toward the printer and the printer has the IP as well. I have reset the network, reset the printers network settings and the set them back up, ensured the computers have the correct ip address for the printer as well. I have tried to print the from the computers with no luck. The printer does pull a proper IP .120 in a .0 network with default gateway matching all the computers which is pingable. Printer doesn't show in the arp table either.
The computers can't find the printer, neither can the phone and the same from printer to computer when attempting to scan to the computer. I have checked the WIA on all computers, restarted the service also.
Also tried manually setting the IP on the printer and still no luck. My wireless range hasn't changed as I'm still within signal distance from the router with a strong signal.
Tried Print and scan Doctor - no luck
I'm at a total loss minus hooking a computer directly up to the printer at this point.
I keep thinking 'PC load letter' and laugh as this must be something small i'm overlooking.
    HELP?
Problem solved - full reset on router and network settings on printer.

    Hi Carlman,
I'd like to help you obtain a more consistent connection. I feel that disabling the IPv6 would help us accomplish this. Please use the instructions in the following post to enable only the IPv4.

  • I created an email address from the Officejet 8600 control panel for scan to email. I also created two other email addresses by accessing the embedded web server in the Officejet 8600. All three email addresses appear using the 8600 control panel, but the one I created from the control panel is not lised in the E-Mail Address Book when I use a browser to access the embedded web server.
How can I delete the one I entered from the control panel on the printer?

    Hey dutch55,
Have you tried power cycling all the devices involved to see if the email setup with the Control Panel of the printer will show up in the list under the EWS?
    Unplug the router while on
    Wait 30 seconds
Plug router back up and wait for it to completely power up
    Restart PC
    Unplug printer while on
    Wait 30 seconds
Plug printer back up for power
New safari for ipad. If this still does not get the desired results, then the next best option is going to be to reset this printer to a factory state. This will remove all input data and settings you may have put in the printer. This will also remove the setup you have established for scan to email and will have to be re-setup. I wanted to let you know this beforehand, but this should get you the results you are looking for. I will send the steps to perform this reset in a private message. Before performing the steps please read Bob_Headrick's thread on printer resets, found here.
